methane to ethane and ethane to methane conversion ,halogenation reaction, wurtz reaction, grignard reaction, decarboxylation reaction

Introduction:

methane and Ethane both are hydrocarbon and they are belongs to alkene family the formula of methae is ch4 and the formula of Ethane is c2h6.

how to convert methane to ethane

there are two process by which we can convert methane to ethane

 process 1
firstly we can we convert  methane to methyl chloride by treating methane with chlorine in presence of sunlight(halogenation reaction) after that methyl chloride convert to Ethane via wurtz reaction in which methyl chloride treated with sodium in presence of dry  ether solvent .

process 2
In grignard reaction firstly we convert methyl chloride to methyl magnesium chloride by reacting methyl chloride with magnesium in dry ether solvent in the second step of grignard reaction methyl magnesium chloride react with methyl chloride and it produced  Ethane.

Methane to ethane

Ethan to methane conversion

the carbon number in ethane is 2 and the carbon number in methane is 1 so we need to decrease the carbon number for that purpose

ethane is first treated with chlorine in presence of sunlight and converted to ethyl chloride

and the second step ethyl chloride converted to ethyl alcohol by treating with Aqua potassium hydroxide

in third step ethanol converted to acetic acid by oxidation with potassium dichromate in concentrate H2SO4 solution

and the last step composed of decarboxylation reaction of acetic acid and we get methane.
